ROME - PIAZZA NAVONA

Piazza Navona- the city square located in Rome on the east side of the Tiber river.

Originally the place was an ancient stadium, where people gathered to watch the games, but  in a late 15th century was formed into a shape of public square  in a barouque style and until now resambles the shape of a circus.

The plaza was created by erecting municipal buildings, palaces, and edifieces that surrounded the place and added important  accentuation, provided a desirable intervals to make its long shape more interesting, but also provided the harnonuous symetry.

Most precious of buildings that were erected during the re- shaping the place were :
Palazzo Pamphili - founded and occupied  by Popes Innocent X family designed by Girolamo Rainaldi
St Agnes in Agony  - church designed by Francesco Borromini and Girolamo and Carlo Rainaldi.

The square is a very significant example of baroque style public spaces.Consists of three fountains ,the biggest and most grandeur of them is the middle one with the obelisk , famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers  by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The second fountain is  Fontana del Moro to the south with a basin and four Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta with Bernini's statue of a Moor, or African, wrestling with a dolphin,

Third of the fountains located to the north end - Fountain of Neptune sculptured by Giacomo della Porta.
