The castle located on one of highest hills of the town, is the reminder of a period of a prosperity and wealth of this small town, which developed in 14th,15th,16th century,also thanks to its jewish inhabitants.
This great building was erected for the nobleman Jan Kmita as a simple stronghold with rectangular edifice with internal patio and towers on each corner.
After his death the castle was bough by Sebastian Lubomirski, rebuilt and extended in italian style of Palazzo in Fortezza with surrounding fortifications, by Maciej Tiepola and its character have been remained until today.
The castle approach had a drawbridge with the beautyful entrance gate.
All the external walls remained originall, mannerist portico , some internal vaults, decorative timber ceilings, a spacious courtyard with balconies, and a chapel were reachly decorated with paintings and frescoes.
This is definitely one of the most attractive castles of lesser Poland from this period.
Strongly recomended for those visiting Krakow as the town lays about 40km away from Krakow and it takes only 1hour to get there by car and experience the spirit of the great, great architecture.
