In 1204 some time after Norman invasion of Ireland, Meiler Fitzeherny was instructed by King John of England to erect the castle of typical Norman courtyard design ( Romanesque style developed by Normans) The building was raised for administration and defensive purposes and formed a corner part of defensive city walls surrounded with moat artificially floaded with River Poddle.

In 1224 the castle was credited a chapel and next major redesign was made in baroque style by Surveyor General Sir William Robinson in 1688 - when he proposed
ground floor arcades and the steep dormered roofline.( simillar to his Royal Hospital Kilmainham)

Later some further additions were designed to create a lower yard for administration and in eightinth century as Georgian streetscape of Dublin was being developed, the upper yard of castle was also developed by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce using the basic design inherited from Sit William Robinson, then the erection of State Apartments followed - which can be seen from the rear side, painted in bright colours, reminding the lego blocks.

Another extensions that followed those developments were designed by Francis Johnston the main vehicular entrance called Ship street entrance, the Chapel Royal -also called Church of the Most Holly Trinity, built in XIX-th century in neo- gothic style( building adjoining the powder tower with the crenelation) , and Chester Beatty Library, and later designed by Jacob Owen carriage block in neo gothic style and neo classical carriage office.

KRAKOW - OLD TOWN BARBICAN

The gothic style krakow barbican is a fortified external castle that used to be linked with the main Florian's gate and city walls in medieval times.

01 Barbican www architectureofeurope blogspot

This partly round outbuilding was important part of Krakow fortification as the invaders needed to enter this tricky building to get acces to the city.

02 Barbican www architectureofeurope blogspot

It was developed as a feature strengthening the main entrance by directing the enemy through the narrow passages - which made the invaders an easy target for the defeners. It was also called a death trap.

The building was built in 1498 and is one of three such fortified outposts still surviving in Europe.

HATFIELD - HATFIELD HOUSE AND OLD PALACE

The Jacobean building is located in Hatfield, Herdfordshire and since its erection has been a residence of Cecil family that was always close to the following kings and queens of England like King James I or Queen Elizabeth I which was even brougth up in the old gothic palace ( acquired by Henry VIII ) located in the close proximity to the residence ( shown on the last pictures)

The edifice was built in 1611 by the founder of the family then Robert Cecil, First Earl of Salisbury and chief minister to King James I.

A perfect example of Jacobean architecture - the second phase of Renaissance architecture in England after Elizabethan style.

Sites of a new house and the old palace are linked together with a fabulous gardens and landscape architecture and a spectacular park.

Original stables were converted into a comercial area with restaurant and souvenir shops .

LILLE - CITADEL OF LILLE ( CITADELLE DE LILLE)

A protecting pentagon shaped fortess with bastions, that was a key part of Lille city walls.

The building was built around 1668 and designed ( in late renaissance/ early baroque style) by noble french man, most renowned military engineer of the time Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban who mastered the design of the fortification of french cities to perfection and was a father of many citadels like this one along the french - belgian border.

The citadel is also known " Vaubans citadel" and " Queen of Citadels".

I am not sure if  it is possible to visit the building inside as the building is occupied by the army - and is still used as a french military base.
